 I can't say this enough. Use the bathroom exhaust fan. Let it run for at least 15 minutes after taking a hot steamy shower or bath. If the fan is old, replace it. It's a lot less money to spend than a complete restoration painting job. Mold remediation adds to the cost of painting a bathroom significantly such as this one. And it can be unhealthy.

• Caulk around the tub enclosure and any gaps to seal out future moisture.
• Prime the ceiling and walls using a high-quality oil-based stain-killing bonding primer. This not only blocks any remaining stains or discoloration but helps lock down any spots where mold might try to return.
• Paint the ceiling using durable white ceiling paint made for high-moisture areas.
• Patch, fix, and sand the walls smooth.
• Finally, apply 2 coats of premium paint in the customer’s chosen color.

💡 Pro Tip from JCB Painting:

Bath Fitters using clear pure silicone caulking.

 

This is what to expect from a Bath Fitter bathroom renovation. They use a pure clear silicone caulk all around that starts to deteriorate in just a few years. It looks good at first. 

As a professional interior painter who paints a lot of bathrooms, I have come across this scenario many times over the years.

When Bath Fitters first apply the pure silicone caulk it looks fine but after a few years, this is what it looks like. Always!

When I have to paint a Bath Fitter bathroom I charge much more because of this. Pure silicone caulk should never be used where there will be paint. PAINT DOES NOT STICK TO IT. "Dap" makes a paintable silicone caulk but Bath Fitters has not heard of it. Unfortunately for the homeowner who has to live with the results and pay more later to have their bathroom repainted

Before painting a Bath Fitter bathroom all the pure silicone caulking has to be removed and re-caulked with paintable caulk. 

Re-moving deteriorating pure silicone caulk is a nightmare. It only comes off in small rubbery pieces. Then when you think you got it all removed and you start painting you find that there is still some leftover that you couldn't see because it is PURE SILICONE CAULKING. Thank-you Bath Fitters. For Nothing!

Yes, a lighter wall color in a small room such as this bathroom looks much better than a dark color that makes the room look and feel smaller than it already is, as it was before adding this new color called "calming cream" by Benjamin Moore. After more than 30 years in the paint biz, Jcb Painting has a good idea what colors work best because of extensive experience.

Jcb Painting will be painting this bathroom and the rest of this 3 bedroom condo in Walpole MA. This bathroom is very small and to paint it with a dark color just makes it look even smaller. We will be repainting it with a light cream color from Benjamin Moore Paints. Stay tuned.

After images from my last bathroom paint job in Foxborough, MA. What usually takes 2 days to do, painting from baseboard to ceiling, took 4 days because this bathroom was in poor shape. A big contributor of the mold and paint failure was not using the ceiling fan. 
The wall color is "la paloma gray" by Benjamin Moore.

Jcb Painting caulked all around the shower enclosure to keep
moisture from seeping under the paint and causing a paint failure after using the shower.

The medicine cabinet will be replaced at a later date.

The bottom line here is always use your ceiling fan to exhaust the moisture
in the air after using the shower. Keep it on for at least 15 minutes.

This is what happens when your bathroom isn't properly prepped and painted. Priming and caulking would have prevented this and saved the homeowner money when they hired Jcb Painting to fix it. 
The original paint job had a really bad caulking job around the vanity and along the baseboard which Jcb Painting had to completely remove and redo. Where the other painter should have absolutely caulked was around the shower enclosure as you can see from the images.

Then when it has to be painted you have to pay more money
and time to get the job done, even if you do it yourself.

the exhaust ceiling fan is hardly used or not at all. Before using the shower the ceiling fan should be turned on and kept on for at least 15 minutes after to exhaust the moisture from the air. So the lesson here is, use your bathroom fan. It's there for a purpose.
